Early Life

Born on 3 September 1976, Chamath Palihapitiya spent his early childhood in his home country of Sri Lanka. In 1982, his father took a job at the Commission of Sri Lanka in Ottawa, Canada. The commission posting ceased in 1986 but instead of returning to Sri Lanka where a civil war was unfolding, his family applied to stay in Canada under a refugee status.

From an early age, he excelled in his academic interests in mathematics and technology which provided him with the foundations of what to become his later career. These interests led him to complete a degree in electrical engineering at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada.

Career

After receiving his electrical engineering degree in 1999, Palihapitiya went to work in Silicon Valley at Winamp, which then became AOL, and became the youngest Vice President in the company’s history. His time at Facebook was volatile, to say the least. He led the release of the failed project, Facebook Beacon, which led to lawsuits. But then he played a pivotal role in bringing the social media platform to 1 billion users, partially due to his Growth program which focussed on new customers. His high performance and reputation for getting done were tarnished by his labeling as a ‘bully’ by some of his co-workers.

After leaving Facebook, Palihapitiya founded the Social+Capital Partnership with his then-wife. He also made investments in a number of businesses including Slack, Box, Glooko, Relativity Space, and Yammer through his new fund. In 2015, his fund was rebranded to Social Capital which is where his investment funding really took off. It is reported that Social Capital possessed more than $1.1 billion worth of external investor funds.

He made several of his early startup investments through Embarcadero Ventures, and he even assisted in the sale of the Golden State Warriors, in which he continues to hold stock. When he assisted Virgin Galactic in going public via SPAC and sold his stock in 2021 for $213 million, his net worth significantly increased. In 2022, he stepped down as chairman of Virgin Galactic.

Social Capital continues to invest in companies that hold emerging technologies in areas including energy transition and climate science, life sciences, deep technology, and Bitcoin.
