What is Ethereum?

Ethereum is a decentralized operating system that empowers you to develop and manage your own applications without any interference. With the Ethereum platform, the concept of “decentralized applications” is no more an abstract notion.

The founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin has been working with blockchain and Bitcoin since it started. Today, there are several cryptos being celebrated through ICOs that have Ethereum as their base.

These tokens are called ERC-20, and they allow scripts to run on the Ethereum Virtual Machine. The development of “smart contracts” has led to the creation of Ethereum tokens, which have a variety of functions beyond being a medium of exchange. Ethereum’s transactions can now be used for more than just transferring value – they also serve to execute the instructions set out in the smart contract code.

Ethereum often pays for its contracts and decentralized apps in its own cryptocurrency, Ether, but it also requires GAS, a cryptocurrency that goes towards powering those transactions like computing tasks.

GAS price is proportional to the type of computational power required to execute a task.
